TUNA FISHING #1

TUNA FISHING #2

TUNA FISHING #3

The "MV Eastern Star" about 600 miles west of Panama searching for tuna. Note the large skiff which is used to pull out the 1 1/2 mile long seine net piled on the stern of the 165' long ship. Running alongside is one of the three speedboats used to corral schools of porpoise (a type of dolphin) as tuna fish are always found beneath porpoise that are feeding.

The sun sets into a calm Pacific Ocean as a workhand aboard a tuna Seiner climbs the ladder going up to the ship's lookout located high on the main mast.

In fishing for tuna (where the seine net is set around a school of porpoise) - after the net has been fully closed - the next step is to "back up the net". This results in the porpoise congregating at the end of the net furthest from the ship. As the net is slowly pulled backwards through the water and the porpoise leap into the air, often the untargeted porpoise end up jumping over the floats holding up the net's top edge and so reach freedom again. Unfortunately, during rolling seas many porpoise are inadvertently drowned by the net.
